Latin name: Opyra aenescens or Hydrotaea aenescens
Ophyra are small flies know as Dump flies. Ophyra are used in wet manure pits such as poultry and hog facilities and consume housefly maggots and eggs. An introduction of Ophyra into storage or collection pits produces millions of predaceous larvae within 10 days. The Ophyra will stay in the pit until cleaned out.
Note: Only available for release in Ontario and Quebec.
SHIPPED: Fly pupae in vermiculite in tubes.
OPTIMUM CONDITIONS: 26C (80F), 60% humidity.
Late summer to early spring when fewer houseflies are entering building. Can not ne used prior to cleanout and disinfection, when insecticides or lava ides have been used within 30 days or natural pyrethrins have been used within 7 days.
RELEASE RATE: Release the parasites at the first sign of flies and two weeks later.
High-Rise layer House or Caged Poultry 1 large unit per 77m. sq. (825 ft. sq.) of pit for hot spot control. Units can be released at one time or introductions can be done in two or more installations.
Poultry Breeder Houses: 1 large unit per 209m.sq. (2250 ft. sq.) of pit for hot spot control. A second installation of same amount can be done 2 to 4 weeks later to help combat an unusually high infestation of season flies.
Hog Manure Pits: 1 unit per 77m.sq. (825 ft. sq.) of pit for hot spot control. Units can ne released at one time or divided into two installation two weeks apart.
SPECIAL NOTES: Ophyra will stay on pit and will not become a pest in barns or outdoors.
